I've been wondering, there are alot of different ways to roleplay in Nexus; as a merchant, as an artist, even as some guy who sits arounds all day and acts like he runs the place. So wouldn't that mean that it is possible for one to roleplay certain types of criminals in Nexus?

With a little bit of thought I've actually been able to think of two criminal roleplaying archetypes. The funny thing is that, while these two archetypes are technically criminals, their actions could actually be considered heroic or even virtuous:

1.) The Charitable Thief: There are many different versions of this archetype in traditional legends. Robin Hood, Jessie James, Goemon, all of them fall into this category. As you've probably been able to guess by now, the charitable thief is one who steals only from the rich and gives to the needy. Now, this archetype may be a little hard to play out in Nexus as it does require on to identify those are truly corrupt with wealth and those who are truly downtrodded and needy, something that isn't so black and white in an online roleplaying game.

2.) The Satirist: The funny is that in some cultures (especially ours) this archetype isn't even considered a criminal, but in Nexus blatantly poking fun at those in power can get one into a lot of trouble. A criminal only in thought, the satirist makes his name known by pointing out the flaws of people who are usually more powerful than he. Kings, queens, senators, merchants, judges, archons, even the way society acts, all ar open game for the satirist. Of course this is a lot less fun in Nexus than it sounds since all your going to do is post stories on certain boards making fun of corruption in the system (maybe in ways that aren't all too pleasing to read), but roleplaying is roleplaying, just try to make sure that you put some subtlety in your humor, and not just act like a jackass.

This concludes this opening post. I may come up with more archetypes as time goes on. In the mean time, I'd like to read every one else's ideas. (Please note: just because I posted this topic does not mean that I am actually going to do any of these things in Nexus.)

Oh, uh, ideas. Right...

3.) The Trickster: Mischief. There isn't enough in the lands. The Trickster goes out with the deliberate intention of stirring up trouble. Usually not malicious, but you never know. There are a couple of us out there. wink.gif

EDIT: (The others I had didn't really fit as "unlawful" per se. This one may cross and recross the line.)

The problem is that when you say you are roleplaying a theif, the judges say they are roleplaying a judge. So you have to roleplay around the limits of the game. You'd have to be a damn good theif and make your victims literally hand the items to you and even then you are probably breaking some rule that hasn't been invented yet. Anyway, most people that are punished for theft probably weren't doing it in a roleplay manner... Nexus has become a non-roleplaying game for most of its players. So when people hear "Theif!" they are not going to think "((oh someones roleplaying a theif and someone just got robbed))."

I'm sure you could satirize the public officials. They just can't know you are doing it. So you would have to craft a intricate allegory roleplaying all this. You could distribute this in a way that it is not obviously satirizing the officials. Voila!

I agree that some people should cause some trouble (stupid treaties) and stir things up. Maybe overthrow a few organizations or start a war. The problem is that as we go towards a more and more non-roleplay community, we lose the ability to roleplay conflict like this. The Barbarians can't run around and go "LOL MHULS A N00B" at every kingdom event (not saying that they do or did, Barbarians are just an easy example). However with most of the new users now this is the span of their idea of invading. Thus the laws reflect this kind of behavior. The solution would be to clarify the line between roleplay and just being jerks.

well, robin hood is actually a fairy tale and the real robin hood was just a petty thief .. but i think that's beside your point =p

and a satirist, i never really thought as a criminal. maybe to high society/noblemen and the king, but he's a hero to the public. voltaire for example. scorned by the king but fed by the public. interesting point you make though. (its hard to think of satirists as criminals in todays western society since we have that whole freedom of speech crap, we can do whatever we want without going to jail).

but we've had satirists, many of them. genji stands in my mind most at the moment. and it didnt seem that boring for him ;p there's been plenty who've made posts on comm or made out sages (but it was so long ago i dont remember). muses too. you could even say those imediat comics were satire. probably ooc satire though. sad.gif

roleplaying hasnt really been much of a big thing in the past some years though. unfortunately.

At first, I did have very "evil" roleplay. My character is really sarcastic, honest, and especially mean.

The problem I faced was that people thought I was being me irl, instead of roleplaying. So I ran into a lot of issues that occured with me getting tattle taled on and people hating me for that.

So in actuality, you have to factor that while Nexus IS a roleplaying game, people do not always understand that. Especially with evil roleplay, they think you actually hate THEM IRL.

It's probably one of the harder roleplaying styles to play, in Nexus at least.

Someone got jailed for picking up an item that someone dropped once, if I remember correctly.
Kinda stupid in my opinion. No one can really steal something from you without it being at least partially your fault.

I wasn't necessarily talking about evil roleplay, just unlawful. Or rather I should say it's just roleplaying that might not sit well with those in power wink.gif.

that's *amazing*. judges never jailed for theft, attesting that it was ALWAYS the players fault if anyone ever got stolen. which was utter bogus. its cute that judges might actually being doing something now other than jailing for profanity

They rarely jail people for it. They have to have solid proof like a screenshot of them admitting they stole it I think. Our justice systems is messed up in too many ways to list...

If I were roleplaying a criminal character I wouldn't mind bearing a correct justice brand (being jailed for roleplayed crimes like theft, case of in character slander (Satirist), murder, attempted murder). You can't have it all,... You can become an unsuccessful criminal.

Which brings me to the possibility to roleplay a murderer. Even if certain game-mechanics are against you (no pk in most of the public areas, people ressurect), people should be able to pull it off.

And? That's perfectly appropriate with the roleplay: you get caught stealing too many times, they're going to execute you (previous offenses would have resulted in lost hands).

If you roleplay the "bad guy", you need to take the consequences. I see no problem, if I were roleplaying a thief, going to jail.

Theft has always been illegal, just difficult to prove. Theft cases can't be handled by regular judges, they have to go through the head judge.

The reason they say that you're giving up your item is because they don't want you to expect that it can be resolved through justice.

theft is one of the more bigger problems in nexus anyway. just dont drop your items and becareful who you make friends with is all..

It's impossible to steal. Drop, handing items is not stealing because you are engaging in the act of giving it away even with no intent too. Kru could find out everything that they say the can't but the programmers aren't steller programmers, and no that's no knock on them.

One of the things that never ceases to amaze me is the people who want to roleplay a particular type of character but only on their terms. For example, the "dark" character ... they want to be "evil" but they don't want people to hate them for it. You can't have it both ways. If you're roleplaying a bad guy, you have to act like a bad guy, and people are going to treat you as a bad guy. (no, posting on Spam of the Winds is not roleplaying, unless you count it as roleplaying an author; RP is what you do, not what you write about someone doing)

Take me, for example. If any of you still remember me, you probably remember a harsh, cold person with a quick temper and no tolerance for fools. Some Nexus players who have met me IRL have been, I think, somewhat disappointed when they didn't meet Worldwalker after all; I'm actually pretty laid back, I laugh a lot, and I tell really stupid jokes. When I was in Nexus I was respected and feared by a lot of people, hated by a lot, and actually liked by only a few. That's how people would naturally react to the character I was playing. Nobody likes someone who will bite their head off for doing something stupid (bad poets of Nexus, I'm talking to you!) or that they think will tear them apart on Comm. I knew that. I knew that people weren't going to like Worldwalker. I knew what was going to happen. And I accepted the results. I didn't whine and complain and tell people "that's just RP, I'm really a nice person." If I wanted to be liked, I'd get on my poet. 8-)

Nothing is "just RP" -- whatever actions you take in Nexus, whether hunting until your fingers fall off or scheming for power or just sitting under a rosebush talking to people, that's all RP. You become your character when you log in, and you only leave it behind when you leave. That's what a MMORPG is. What you do, your character does.

It's certainly possible to play a "satirist" type of character, or someone who goes out of their way to make life miserable for the people in power. I did plenty of that. Iudicium spent several years trying to find some excuse to jail me as a result of that and, um, other things. I'll tell you, there's nothing that can raise your paranoia level like having a feud going with the Chief Judge! I cheerfully tore into clan primogens, archons, elders, royals, and of course Nexon itself, in person or all over Comm. I made a lot of enemies that way. That's not a character you want to play unless you can deal with knowing that many of the people who act friendly to you are only doing it in an attempt at aiming you toward the target of their choice, and that nobody will ever really trust that they won't be the next one in your sights. You will find more true friends among your adversaries than among those who claim to be on your side.

But what it all comes down to is that if you're going to play a character of a particular sort, you have to deal with the consequences of playing that character. Remember, Robin Hood had a lot of people trying to kill him (oh noes, permadeath!) and was eventually betrayed and murdered. He and the Sheriff of Nottingham didn't hang up their RP at the end of the day and go out for a beer. What happens after you log off, well, that's up to you. That's the only real OOC.

Roleplaying isn't following some script, or posting on CotW, or telling people what your character is all about. It's being that character, and doing what that character does. If you want to be evil, then you're going to be treated as evil ... and I'll tell you, it's rough enough just being treated as cold and mean; I'm not sure I could handle how people react to evil. You're going to face the consequences of doing evil acts. Because if you don't, you're not going to be "dark" or "evil" or "bad" ... you're just going to be some silly kid who prances around wearing a Superman cape and insisting that everyone else goes along with pretending he can fly.

In Nexus, people who often want to play a dark and evil person, don't really know what its all about. Half the time when I see people acting like criminals, they just act like retarted teenagers that can't act sinister even if they tried. Its very obvious. Just remember, in real life, criminals don't say "Noob". Huge pet peeve about Nexus. If you can't roleplay, please learn from actual good roleplayers not people that roleplay sire junkies.
