I've looked over the charts, and am wondering if its more profitable to smelt the ore I mine, and sell the metal, rather than selling the base ore.

I have found that prices for ore are around 3/6/12, so 1000k is 120k/240k/480k, and from what I have seen on sage metal goes for 900k/1000. I looked over the charts, and it seems that the average yield is 1/3 for smelting ore. That would mean that if I smelted all my ore I "should" turn a profit of around double. My biggest concern is the intital investment to leveling smelting, and the time investment to smelt the ore. Also, I was wondering what the most efficent way to level smelting is. Should I smelt all my poor ore early, and save the high for higher skill levels for a larger yield, or is it better to smelt the better ore sooner, for more successes and to level up more quickly? I'm willing to keep track of my smelting success/ore expended, but am curious which route I should take. Thanks!:D

Smelting ore and selling the metal has always been the most profitable way to earn money within that realm of crafting. As far as smelting goes, smelt your poor first, while saving medium and higher qualities of ore until later on. Yes, high and very high quality ore have better yield potential, but not in the hands of a novice smelter. Hope that helps.

Nooo! If you don't smith your own metal then you won't be able to make the utterly useless Titanium blade and Molten blade!

What DM means to say is, you won't progress in smithing if you sell the metal, but with metal selling in bulk at almost 1k per, it's better to sell the metal. If you ever strive to be Ee san though, you will need to master a skill such as smithing.

Try finding someone who pays 900k before you put that extra time into smelting your ore.

Are you saying this is an inflated price? Or that there isn't a market for metal?

I also read through another thread about mining/smelting/smithing and vendoring the items. And turning a relatively decent profit.
I enjoy mining over the other related gathering activities(Ambering/wool/woodcutting) because I am a poet, and can't effectively amber, and the competition involved in wooling, and the monontity involved in woodcutting and the perceived lesser profit (300k/1k). I'm commited to mining as my gathering skill, and am trying to fiqure out the most profitable way to go about it.

I'm a Master miner and still do not feel it would be that profitable. Problem is that there is not an effective way to gather ore then deposit it from those mining fields. There is an unfortunate load time from the Wilderness to the Arctic pass, and I am not married or blood brothered, so not much luck here. In addition, I gather poor ore much too quickly, and would also have a problem with just one mining bag because medium ore would become a problem to gather effectively. Two mining bags just to ensure I deposit without leaving any on the ground is too hefty a price for me. As a poet, once you have the stats for it, I would look into soloing vortex bosses for drops and ambers. There are detailed manuscripts on how to solo these bosses on some of the tutor boards I believe.

I think a little of both, but the first more than the second.

I may be a little outdated but your Ore buying price seems rather low for the poor/med Ores. Prices would rather be 4/8/12 as a standard and going as high as 5/10/15 depending on average quality of the ores. The quality of ores will have a very high impact on your success rates. When smelting, Poor Ore is rarely worth the deal, Med Ore will make slight profits starting from GM up and High+ ore will make you profit from Expert up (If I remember correctly, at Master, High Ore has a 100% success rate when smelting).

Above that Metal buyers have always been rare and I believe market price will probably be closer to 700k/1,000 when selling in bulk.

I've always found it more profitable to sell the ore but then again from expert miner onwards it wasn't the poor ore that posed a problem anymore, and there are at least two ways to get around the load time...
