NexusTK should go on Steam Greenlight but if it goes on right now it will get downvoted to oblivion because anyone who tries it will be hella bored.

KRU needs to address the game problems for newbies first. They haven't done it, and my guess is they will not because it would require too much energy and KRU just wants to make a quick buck with the least amount of effort.

The game has a shelf life, and it's tied to the lifespans of the people still obsessed with it and have been playing for two decades. Once enough of these people die the game will close.

As someone who played this game for nearly a decade before finally being fed up with the terrible management this "company" has to run the game, I will tell you with 100% confidence, to stay the hell away from this game.

As an old school fan, this game unfortunately is all looks, no substance. "Gameplay" revolves around monotonous holding down the space bar key till mob die, repeat. End game is literally an infinite grind, and I mean infinite quite literally. Which wuld be fine if hunting wasnt so boring and monotonous and barely evolved in almost 20 years.

If you really want to play an old school style MMO, go play Dungeon Fighter Online Global or something, at least that game is actually, FUN, and free to boot.

You also haven't played in half a decade so that kind of invalidates everything you've just said.

That's odd because I seem to have friends that I'm constantly doing things with, whether it's playing nexus or even other games together, and I hardly ever hunt.
The game realistically is what you make of it and just because you think that everyone is afk trying to find a hunt doesn't really make it so.

I was just commenting on the fact that it's really difficult to find a hunt (hunt, not leech) when there are only ~80 active players on a Saturday afternoon. It's not like this is some sort of secret. It was often hard to find a hunt in '04, even with 300+ active players online.

Former players looking to rejoin the game without friends to join with them are looking at a barren wasteland where few people are anywhere near their n00b 99 stats. A new retro server would result in the majority of the community being in a similar stat range for a long time. Even with the current population (or even smaller), it would be more fun since player interaction would vastly increase. In MMOs that require grouping for hunts, it doesn't really matter where you're at on the treadmill, as long as there are others nearby. NexusTK doesn't currently offer that for new/returning players, so the anemic growth this summer shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

As much as I would love a "clean slate" server, splintering an already small playerbase is a bad idea, unless you're expecting Kru to shut down the current server, which wont happen.

That was my initial thought when first lobbying for a complete reset, but I've come to realize that it wouldn't be a big deal, simply because the new server would offer more player interaction despite a potentially smaller pool of players.

Assuming the new server were retro (pre-Vortex, pre-Nag), even if there were only 40 active players on a Saturday (half the current server's numbers), the available caves/areas would be far busier than they are on the current server. Carnages would be insanely fun since Adventure/Glory/Legends were always a chaotic (and enjoyable) mess. The hype generated from people racing to be the first to 99, first to Il, first to Ee would be more than enough to sustain the server for at least a few years. If the old server started losing subs, it wouldn't really be all that different than its current state. You can't really make a ghost-town less of a ghost-town. It's already a ghost-town, ya know? Too many maps/caves/stat ranges for too small a player base that very obviously isn't growing anymore. Consider the "growth" this summer and note its trajectory since Sept. 1st.

Just look at the player composition of the private servers that have popped up over the years. These aren't filled with people who are concurrently subscribed to NexusTK. They're filled with people who have no interest in playing on an 18 y/o server and want to tap into nostalgia while having a chance at being the buffest/richest/PVPiest, etc. This segment of the market outnumbers the current server population. A new server wouldn't fragment the player base nearly as much as you're thinking (and I used to think). Most of the interest for a new server is coming from people who would never even consider playing on the current server. Also worth noting that despite the F2P model of those private servers, their user base has proven it's willing to pay (often much more than $10/month) for ugly maps, an immature GM who yells at players over sage, poorly designed, unfamiliar content, etc. There are more than a few former players like me who would throw their wallet/car/house keys at an official retro server.

If the old server eventually died, why would that even matter? What game is expected to live to see its 20th birthday? It's a miracle NexusTK hasn't died already, and a growing, new server would mean that it actually hasn't died at all. It would also be infinitely more marketable on Steam, which might be the single-most important point in all of this.

Understating quite a bit aren't we? There's typically 300-400 peak players, in recent events it was even hitting 500+.

To state that there's only 80 players online Saturdays is extremely off basis.

Anyways I'll have to respond to all the reasons a reset would be catastrophic when I've got more time.

3-400? I check NA player counts ~6 days/week and I've yet to see it hit 400 since August. You're also talking about a completely different metric. Notice I said active players. I actually took the time to whisper a quarter of the people "playing" on a Saturday at 12:30PM PST in late August and received 17 responses. That's approx. 68 active players, which I've rounded up to 80 to factor in people who just don't respond to whispers for whatever outlandish reason (it's a tiny game where a random whisper is a godsend nowadays). Even if you tried to argue that the number is closer to 100 active players, I wouldn't consider that "extremely off basis." The majority of people signed in at any given time aren't actually playing, and many, many people who still play this game dual-account. These are not secrets. It is known.

Side note: Surely someone smarter than me has come up with a way to pull player counts at regular intervals. Is there a site somewhere already with this info? Is anyone bored enough to set this up?

If you're going to take the time to respond, please make sure we're talking about the same thing. A reset is a nonstarter, as Wony already ruled it out. He only said he would consider a new server (after addressing other issues first). We're talking about a new, retro server alongside the current server. Pre-Vortex, pre-Nagnang, with the goal of capturing the market of former and new players who would never dream of playing an 18 y/o MMO. Private servers have already proven this market exists and is willing to pay for a subpar product.

Anyone considering playing this game need only look at the newest official "event" the people in charge thought would be compelling.

There was a "roleplaying event" where a bunch of adult players decided to roleplay as "royal children" and have a "playdate picnic". This has to be the most bizarre use of event characters I've ever seen.

The lunatics are running the asylum. Don't bother.

Eh, you're being a little salty here imo.

If you really want to berate the leaders of this game, look no further than this summer's only real update in the daily coin mechanic! lol. Every time I bring it up, no one addresses it. Straight out of a terrible mobile game's playbook.

Every time someone says this, they never actually respond laugh.gif

I've checked every day at peak times, and the Halloween event has yet to crack 400 logged players (though it has gotten close). See my above post about active vs. afk numbers if you plan on taking the time to respond.

I think KRU lost their chance to really attempt to better the game back when they updated the graphics to what we have now. People were screaming about quitting due to the graphic upgrade back then, so why not go all out. Because people complained so much, they originally had it so you could go back and forth between the old and new graphics but it constantly messed up and they eventually got rid of the old graphics all together. People adjusted and moved on. Honestly though, it is obvious to me and many others that KRU is relying solely on their players for everything. Why would you milk a cow yourself when people line up to do it for you?

KRU honestly thought people want to do a complex fetch quest for a break on death shield with no stats.

I'll stick with FFXIV, thanks.

That's cute, but me not playing for the past decade doesnt invalidate anything I've just said. Oh cool, clan members may be more willing to help you hunt, how does that actually disprove my statement that hunting is the most boring [Content removed] ever? Why dont you actually prove me wrong by showing me that hunting actually evolved and how the game isnt just an endless monotonous grindfest with zero fun-factor or engagement involved?

If you're going to defend this turd of a game, try a bit harder.

This forum is full of bitter former players so you won't get a fair answer. I would definitely recommend trying the game and seeing how you like it. There are a lot of people in the game who are so excited to see actual new players that you should get a warm welcome and help getting started. The active community is fairly small though, so you will spend a lot of time early on wondering where the hell everyone is.
